Abstract:
In today's business climate, many organisations, esp. SMEs, form dynamic
partnerships to effectively deal with market requirements. To enable business
collaboration, many inter-organisational workflow approaches have been
proposed to improve the traditional workflow technologies. Unlike an intra-
organisational workflow system, an inter-organisational workflow system is
required to support (1) the cooperation among participating organisations, (2)
the autonomy of participating organisations, (3) the openness of the
collaboration environment. While the first feature has been well supported by
existing inter-organisational workflow approaches, the support to the second
and third features is far from satisfactory. The autonomy feature brings
difficulty for collaboration in that participating organisations reserve the
right to reveal cooperation detail and the freedom to create and modify their
own business processes. The openness feature complicates the collaboration
with the requirements concerning privacy and security, and flexibility for
organisations to join and leave collaboration or to change partnerships. To
deal with these problems, it will be crucial that business collaboration is
perceived from the view of each individual organisation. In this talk, an
organisation oriented approach for collaborative business processes called
relative workflow model will be presented. This model provides insights and
design strategies for modeling and executing collaborative business processes
from the perspective of individual organisations. Supporting mechanisms for
relative workflow process modeling, enactment and tracking will also be
introduced.
