Abstract:
In a recent joint paper in Math Sbornik (2007) with V.M.Tikhomirov (State University of Moscow) the complete lists of calculus rules---36 in total---for convex objects (such as norms, convex optimization problems, functions, sets and cones) are derived by one single method from the three basic rules for convex cones. For example, this gives eight convexity preserving binary operations on functions with corresponding calculus rules (for the subdifferential and the Legendre-Fenchel transform). Two of these are new. Two main ideas are conification (the association to convex objects of cones, without loss of information) and a systematic construction of binary operations on convex objects. Many applications of the convex calculus will be given including those to the theory of linear equations and inequalities, approximation theory and recovery theory. |

Biography:
Dr. Brinkhuis received his Ph.D. degree from Leiden University (in Mathematics) in 1981. He was a research associate in King's College London, and since 1983 he has been a faculty member at Econometric Institute of Erasmus University Rotterdam. He was nominated as Best-Teacher-of-the-Year by student association for many year, and in 2000 received the Teaching Award of Erasmus University. His research interests include number theory, convex analysis, optimization, and economic problems such as the auction theory and the moral hazard models. |
