Abstract:

Conventionally, broadcasting and communication systems are considered as different and separate areas because one is mainly applied to uni-directional services and the other bi-directional services. As the available bandwidth for wireless systems is rapidly expanding and the protocol of packet-based data transmission becomes unified to Internet protocol (IP), however, the two systems can have identical properties if we relax the end-to-end communication delay constraints.

To efficiently utilize the advantages in convergence networks, a lot of new issues should be considered. Some of them might be easily solved by taking the current state-of-the-art technologies but others might need new paradigms.

In this talk, I would like to explain the issues by focusing on signal processing issues such as what are outstanding problems, what kind of signal processing techniques would be needed to increase the usability of the convergence systems. Finally, I would like to share and discuss about possible research directions.

Biography:

Hong-Goo Kang received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electronic Engineering from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, in 1989, 1991, and 1995, respectively. From April 1996 to August 2002, he served on the staff of the Speech and Image Processing Services Laboratories of AT&T Labs-Research, Florham Park, New Jersey, as a Senior Technical Staff Member working on low bit-rate speech coding and single channel speech enhancement. In September 2002, he joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Yonsei University, where he is currently an Associate Professor. His research interests include speech/audio signal processing, adaptive digital signal processing, and real-time systems. He is serving an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Speech, Audio, and Language Processing.
