Abstract:

The huge advances in high speed signal processing hardware, digital array radar technology, and the requirement of better and better radar performances has promoted, during the last two decades, the development of very sophisticated algorithms for radar waveform design. The present talk first provides a brief introduction concerning the state of art in radar waveforms and then illustrates recently proposed techniques for the synthesis of radar signals. Specifically, in the first part of the talk, the concept of coded radar waveforms will be presented with emphasis on Barker, Costas, and Pushing sequences. Moreover the resulting ambiguity functions will be shown and their relevant properties discussed.

In the second part of the talk, the concept of Knowledge-Based waveform design, where some a-priori information available about the environment surrounding the radar is successfully exploited to mitigate the clutter effects, will be introduced. Then new encoding algorithms resorting to recent findings of Convex Optimization will be presented and their performance extensively analyzed. Finally the idea of Multiple Input Multiple Output radar Space Time Coding will briefly introduced highlighting the potential performance improvements achievable exploiting diversity at both the transmitters and the receiver stage. Conclusions and possible future research tracks will be finally given.

Biography:

Antonio De Maio was born in Sorrento, Italy, on June 20, 1974. He received the Dr. Eng. degree (with honors) in 1998 and the Ph.D. degree in information engineering in 2002, both from the University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy.

From October to December 2004 he was a visiting researcher at the US Air Force Research Laboratory, Rome, New York.

Currently he is an Associate Professor at the University of Naples Federico II. His current research lies in the field of statistical signal processing, with emphasis on radar detection and multiple-access communications. He is an IEEE Senior Member
and belongs to the organizing committee of IEEE Radarcon2008.
