Abstract:
|
This talk gives an
overview of how operations research is applied to the planning and operation
phases for an airline. It discusses various challenges faced by the airline
in the strategic, tactic, and operational areas, and how people use various
OR techniques to model and provide recommendations to the business units.
Examples of topics covered are: strategic planning, flight schedule and
network generation, capacity planning, revenue and profit forecasting, yield
management, crew scheduling, airport operations, and disruption handling.
Lastly, we will discuss the challenges ahead of OR practitioners in this
field and some hot topics people are pursuing. |

Biography:
|
Ron graduated
from HKU in the Mechanical Engineering Department. He worked for several
years in the shipping industry before pursuing graduate studies in the US. He
obtained a Master Degree in Technology and Policy, a Master Degree in
Operations Research, and a PhD degree in Ocean Systems Management, all from
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduation, he joined the
transportation consultant group Sabre as a
consultant for the airline industry. He has since consulted on numerous airline
OR projects for American Airlines. He is now a Principal in American Airlines
Operations Research and Decision Science group, and serving as a chief
technical advisor to AA Capacity Planning Department. |
