Abstract:

Driven by cost reduction consideration and global competition, decentralized assembly channel structure is prevalent, wherein independent suppliers produce a set of complementary components from which an assembler assembles a final product for selling into the market. In such a channel, several factors interact with one another to affect the firms’ price and quantity decisions. They include 1) the vertical interaction between the assembler and component suppliers via contractual arrangements, 2) the indirect competition among the suppliers producing a set of complementary components, and 3) the direct competition among the suppliers producing the same or perfectly substitutable components. In this talk, we first discuss the effects of the competition among the suppliers on their decision making, and investigate the impact of supplier base on the assembler. Then, we explore how the choice of contract arrangement and decision setting determines the performances of the channel and individual firms.
