Abstract:

During the last decade, many Operations Research models and techniques have been developed to solve planning problems arising in the railway industry. The main challenge for the OR community in the coming decades is to develop models and algorithms for optimization problems during the operations. Therefore, this presentation is the split into two parts: in the first part we look at planning problems and the second part we consider a particular problem in disruption management.

In the first part of this presentation, we give a short overview of OR models and techniques that were used to construct the new railway timetable in the Netherlands, in 2007. Netherlands Railways (the largest Dutch railway operator) received the Franz Edelman Award for this work.

The second part of the talk deals with the Operational Crew Re-Scheduling Problem (OCRSP), which is a problem that need to be solved during the disruption management process. The Dutch railway network experiences about three large disruptions per day on average. One of the major problems is to re-schedule the crew such that all crew reach their crew base at the end of their duty and as many trains as possible are operated. We will give a set covering formulation of the OCRSP and we will present a solution approach based on large neigborhood search and column generation techniques.

Biography:

Dennis Huisman is a part-time associate professor Logistics and Management Science at the Econometric Institute of the Erasmus School of Economics. In addition, he works part-time as Operations Research consultant at Netherlands Railways. Finally, he is co-founder and director of the Erasmus Center for Optimization in Public Transport.

He combines both jobs after obtaining his PhD degree in 2004. His PhD thesis dealt with integrated and dynamic vehicle and crew scheduling. His current research focuses on Operations Research models and techniques that can support complex logistical issues in the planning and operations of a railway operator.

In 2008, he participated in the team of Netherlands Railways that won the Franz Edelman Award (also known as the Super Bowl of Operations Research).
