Abstract:

Operations researchers usually tackle logistics problems with optimization techniques. With the advancement in optimization theory and computer hardware, it is now possible to deal with large-scale problems arising in many applications. However, the traditional computational approach is catered for implementation and deals with specific instances one at a time.Structural properties leading to high-level managerial insights or qualitative operational guidelines can seldom be obtained.

In this talk, we will discuss a complementary approach to logistics modeling that leads to tractable analytical models. The basic ideas of dimensional analysis and scaling will be illustrated with examples. Examples will be used to illustrate two application domains. First, the alternative approach allows us to formulate complex logistics network design problems as simple algebraic models, from which various high-level insights can be drawn. Second, this approach can be utilized in the development of heuristics for complex real-world operational problems.
