Gabriel Fung Ph.D.

Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management
The Chinese University of Hong Kong

About Me

I received a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering and Engineering Management from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Before I returned to Hong Kong, I worked at The University of Queensland in Australia and Arizona State University in USA. I founded my startup Lab Viso Limited in 2005, which mainly focuses on applying my research outcomes to solve real-life problems.

My research interest is Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, in the domain of Natural Language Processing (NLP). My NLP research focuses on natural language understanding (e.g., name disambiguation, word segmentation), dialogue response generation (e.g., dialogue state tracking, knowledge tracing), learning efficiency (e.g., few-shot learning) and user-interface design for Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI). One of the major applications of my research outcome is chatbot.

I served the research lab "MOE Key Laboratory of High Confidence Software Technologies" from 2016 to 2021 and attracted government funds of over HK$6 million. I have showcased the research outputs in several international and local expo, including International ICT Expo (2019, 2021), International Exhibition of Geneva (2019, 2021), and InnoCarnival (2018, 2021).

In 2019, I was invited to a "Dinner in Honour" hosted by my University's Vice-Chancellor Professor Rocky Tuan to honour my achievements in research and academia. My achievements and awards include, but not limited to: "Silver Medal" in "The 48th International Exhibition of Geneva", "2017 Science and Technology Progress Award" from the "Ministry of Education Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award" by the Ministry of Education, People Republic of China", and "First Prize of Innovation" in "The 3rd Chinese Youth Congress on Artificial Intelligence".

I have co-authored over 60 publications, including books, book chapters, refereed journal papers and refereed conference papers, in the areas of NLP, AI, machine learning and data mining. Most of his publications have been published in top-tier journals and conferences. I got the best paper award in APWeb08' and PAKDD04'.

My start up Lab Viso Limited has been admitted to the Cyberport Incubation Programme (wholly owned by the Hong Kong Government). I own one trademark, won the "Bronze Prize" of "Smart Ageing Award" in the "Golden Age Expo & Summit 2021" (note: the "Gold Prize" was given to a former Fortune 500 listed company and the "Silver Prize" was given to a university), awarded the "Gold Medal" in "The 47th International Exhibition of Geneva" in 2019, and won the "Championship" of "BOC(HK) Hackathon" in 2018.

Research and Commercial Projects (Selected)

Integrated Community-based Microblog Recommendation System (INCOMIRS), 2016 – 2019

Background This research project is fund by the Information Technology Fund (ITF) from the Hong Kong Government. It is a platform project collaborates between The Hong Kong R&D Cen-tre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management Enabling Technologies (LSCM R&D Center) and the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

About This research project attempt to develop a prototype system for issuing products/services recommendations to the social media users based on their posting patterns, post contents, demo-graphic information, location information, temporal information, etc. The goal of this project is not only to “proof of concept”, but also to derive and deploy a model with sound effectiveness based on the state-of-the-art data mining and big data analysis techniques.

My Role & Duty Project Manager.

Literature Recommendation Engine for Researchers, 2016 – 2018

Background This research project is fund by the South China Normal University, Guangzhou, China.

About this research project is to build a literature recommendation engine for recommending the latest literatures to researchers. The goal is to develop a fully featured search and recommenda-tion engine. To build such engine, we will consider several issues, such as, but not limited to: the citation graph among articles, the fact that a user interest may change over time, the authors that the user worked with in the past. Different data mining areas are involved, such as big data anal-ysis, deep learning and concept drift/shift.

My Role & Duty Project Consultant and Solution Architect.

Eye Movement Analyzer, 2016

Background This project is supported by Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital in Hong Kong.

About This project is to analyze the eye movements of Parkinson patients based on the results ob-tained from Tobii Studio. The goal of the analysis is to classify the eye movements into one of the three categories (fixation, saccade and smooth pursuit) and recommend patterns to hospital doc-tors to help doctors to conduct analysis. Major techniques applied are outlier removal, clustering and classification. Some state-of-the-art algorithms, such as IVDT, ST-DBSCAN, are implement-ed.

My Role & Duty Solution Architect and Product Developer.

Colloquial and Typographical Error Detection with Automatic Correction Suggestion, 2015 - 2018

Background This research project is fund by the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Re-search Institute (ASTRI).

About The goal of this research project is to develop an engine for identifying the colloquial Can-tonese within a set of written Traditional Chinese characters, and offer recommendations to re-place the identified colloquial Cantonese with properly written Chinese. In addition, the engine has to identify the typographical errors and to offer correction suggestion. Certain state-of-the-art natural language processing (NLP), pattern matching and data mining techniques are used.

My Role & Duty Project Manager.

Roadshow Mobile App, 2015 – 2016

Background This commercial project is supported by a famous headphone company (name not to be disclosed)

About This project is to develop a mobile app for Android tablet devises. The content of the mo-bile app contains promotional information of the company, such as its audio products, the awards that the company won, etc. This mobile app is not available for public download but is used by the sales in the company for demonstrating their products to the public during their roadshows or promotion events.

About. The Goethe-Institut is a non-profit German cultural association operational worldwide with 159 institutes, promoting the study of the German language abroad and encouraging inter-national cultural exchange and relations. This project is to develop a mobile app game. The goal of this game is to help the players to learn German. The first version of this app was available on 2011 and only iOS version is available. The second version is available on 2016 and both Android and iOS versions are available.

My Role & Duty Solution Architect and Product Developer.

Visual Search (Desktop Software) and Smooth Pursuit (Desktop Software), 2015

Background This project is supported by the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital in Hong Kong.

About This project is to develop two different kinds of desktop software for helping doctors to conduct experiments for monitoring the eye movements of Parkinson patients. Both these two desktop software can be synchronized with the Tobii studio. The goal of the first desktop soft-ware, namely Visual Search, is to keep track of the eye movements of a patient while he/she is searching for a digit among a set of 40 alphabets. The second desktop software, namely Smooth Pursuit, is to keep track of the eye movements of a patient while his/her eyes are following the random movement of a dot on a computer monitor screen.

My Role & Duty Solution Architect and Product Developer.
