Abstract:

We develop and analyze a time based strategy that combines joint
replenishment and stock pooling to coordinate the inventory activities
of independent retailers. Inventories are ordered from the supplier
for the retailers through a virtual warehouse that does not have any
storage capacity and orders are coordinated according to an
integer-ratio policy. Two levels of coordination are considered: order
coordination only at level one and order coordination and stock
pooling together at level two. We provide an exact evaluation of the
effects of order coordination and stock pooling under a general model
for a group of heterogeneous retailers and show that the benefits of
coordination are normally very significant. Moreover, our numerical
analyses also show that the benefits of order coordination and stock
pooling are often much more significant than the value of stock
information. In such situations, coordinating the inventory activities
of independent retailers in the supply chain is significantly more
important than implementing information technologies to share stock
information.

Biography:

Dr. Wang Qinan is currently visiting the Department of Systems
Engineering and Engineering Management, the Chinese University of Hong
Kong the Chinese University of Hong Kong, during his sabbatical leave
from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (NTU), where he
serves as an associate professor.

Qinan\'s research interest lies in two main areas: supply
chain/logistics management and health care management. The former
focuses on the development of mechanisms and policies to coordinate
production/inventory and other activities at different supply chain
members when they are separate and independent economic agents. The
latter focuses on the development of methodologies to measure the
outcomes of and evaluate different health care programs. He has
published more than 30 papers in prestigious international journals
and received a total citation of more than 500 (as of 1 May based on
google-scholar).
