Abstract:

We consider a system where jobs of several types are served by servers of several types, and a bipartite graph between server types and job types describes feasible assignments. This is a common situation in manufacturing, call centers with skill based routing, matching of parent-child in adoption or matching in kidney transplants etc.

We consider the case of first come first served policy: jobs are assigned to the first available feasible server in order of their arrivals.

We will present results for four different systems:
- A loss system with random assignment and no queueing, with a reversible solution
- A stable manufacturing system, with a product form solution,
- An overloaded system with reneging,
- Infinite FCFS matching of an infinite sequence of customers and of services.
We will also pose some questions for future research.

This talk surveys joint work with Rene Caldentey and Ed Kaplan, joint work with Jeremy Visschers, Ivo Adan and Cor Hurkens, and work by Rishy Talreja and Ward Whitt.

Biography:

Gideon Weiss is Professor at the Department of Statistics, University of Haifa, Israel. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Technion, Haifa, and obtained his Ph.D. at Imperial College London with Professor Sir David R. Cox . He has previously been on the faculty of the Technion Israel, Georgia Tech Atlanta, and Tel Aviv University, and has visited Stanford, MIT, Berkeley. His research has been funded consecutively for the last 25 years by the NSF, by BSF (Binational US Israel Science Foundation), by GIF (German Israel Fund) and by ISF (Israel Science Foundation).

His current research interests are in optimization, working on continuous linear programming, in applied probability working on fluid approximation of multi-class queueing networks, and in combining these to achieve control of complex processing networks, with applications to manufacturing, traffic control, communications and supply chain management.

He is the author of some 70 scientific papers, and is or has served on editorial boards of OR, QUESTA, PEIS, and Journal of Scheduling.
