Abstract:
 

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) consist of mobile nodes interconnected by wireless multi-hop communications paths.  Unlike conventional wireless networks, MANETs do not require a fixed infrastructure or a centralized management system.  Flexibilities of MANETs, particularly mobility of nodes, bring a set of unique challenges that need to be addressed to realize their full potentials.  Because the mobile nodes of MANETs are free to move rapidly and arbitrarily, the network topology may change unexpectedly. 

 

This seminar presents algorithms to improve the performance of a MANET using autonomous, intelligent agents and mobility estimation models.  Autonomous agents are special mobile nodes in a MANET, but unlike other nodes, their function is to proactively prevent network bottlenecks and service problems by intelligently augmenting the network topology.  To achieve this function without depending on a central network management system, autonomous agents are expected to dynamically relocate themselves as the topology of the network changes over the time.  The overall research problem is defined as how to determine the best possible locations of autonomous agents and dynamically deploy them to these locations: (i) in the absence of a centralized network management system; (ii) without complete and up-to-date information about the state of the network, and (iii) with inadequate computing resources or limited time to carry out computationally expensive calculations.  First, the seminar presents a centralized algorithm and then an asynchronous, distributed, and scalable algorithm based on flocking to improve the global performance of a MANET.  In addition future research directions will be discussed.

Biography:
 

Abdullah Konak is an Associate Professor of Information Sciences and Technology at the Pennsylvania State University Berks.  He received his degrees in Industrial Engineering, B.S. from Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul-Turkey, M.S. from Bradley University, and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.  His current research interest is in the application of Operations Research techniques to complex problems, including such topics as telecommunication network design, network reliability analysis/optimization, facilities design, and data mining.  He has published papers in IIE Transactions, Operations Research Letters, Informs Journal on Computing, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, International Journal of Modeling and Simulation, International Journal of Production Research, Engineering Optimization, and Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing. He is a member of IIE and INFORMS.
