Abstract:
　

In this study, we investigate the bullwhip effect in China from data on over 1,200 companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges from 2002 to 2009. Specifically, we estimate the ratio of the volatility of production to the volatility of demand as proxy for the bullwhip effect. The results show that more than 2/3 of the companies exhibit the bullwhip effect. We also find that several hypotheses proposed in the existing literature are supported by firm-level data from China and the intensity of the bullwhip effect in China has declined during the period from 2002 to 2009.

Biography:
　

Shitao Yang holds a Ph.D. in Operations Management from Kenan-Flagler Business School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has taught MBA, EMBA, and undergraduate students in several universities. His first job was at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and prior to joining the University of Central Florida he was a Visiting Associate Professor at Robin School of Business, the University of Richmond. His current research and teaching interests include Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Managing Service Operations, and Bioinformatics. His publications have appeared in Management Science, European Journal of Operational Research, Computers and Operations Research, International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Service Industry Management, and Molecular Biotechnology. He recently wrote an invited paper on Inventory Management for John Wiley & Sons’ Handbook of Technology Management published in January 2010.
