Introduction

Computer application on Chinese Natural Language Processing (NLP) is still on the starting stage. The main difficulty is the lack of a comprehensive electronic Chinese thesaurus as a tool to help for analysis.

Thus, to overcome the problem we mentioned above, we intended to construct a machine tractable and readable Chinese thesaurus to help the analysis of Chinese NLP.

This project is one of the Final Year Project of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management in the Chinese University of Hong Kong of 1996 - 1997.

Why we choose "CILIN"?

"TONG YI CI CILIN" (we called it "CILIN" afterwards) is a Chinese thesaurus with a special hierarchy structure. This structure contains valuable semantic information of Chinese. It is a good knowledge source for Chinese NLP.

Also, it is a comprehensive contemporary Chinese thesaurus with over 60,000 entries. Thus, we choose this thesaurus as our database to our Internet based Chinese thesaurus.

 

The on-line Chinese Thesaurus

The Chinese thesaurus can retrieve synonyms, related terms, boarder terms and narrow terms. Also, we have also try to calculate the relatedness between two words based on the semantic structure of CILIN. So that we can determine whether they are synonyms or antomyms automatically. This application is still under testing and any suggestion and comment are welcomed.
